Colouring ‘Tea and Biscuits’

As this is a project is a Webtoon, and therefore likely to be viewed on the small scale of a smartphone screen rather than a B5 printed page, I knew that the colours for this comic needed to be bright and effective, but wanted to retain the sketchy, more traditional style of colouring I experimented with in my initial studies at the very beginning of this project.

SSP2 Brief:

As part of the Situated Studio Practices 2 Independent Project, we are asked to produce out own brief for the project we intend to carry out. My personal project brief for the Tea and Biscuits web comic is as follows:

To produce at least one chapter of a Webcomic or Webtoon, either on your own website or a hosting site, for digital reading and distribution. Your story should carefully consider characterisation and the setting of the story, and how these elements interact with each other.

Your narrative should be at least 30 panels long, and may be the basis or beginning of a longer or more complex story.

SSP 2: Initial Idea

  • A webcomic focussing on the struggle many young LGBT people face when confronting their own identity, telling the story of two young women currently experiencing great difficulties in finding themselves as they meet and help each other.
  • The story follows two young women, Shauna and Annie, as they struggle with the concept of self in the ever changing modern world. Focussing on themes of LGBT identity and recovery from emotionally abusive relationships, this comic draws on my own experiences as a young LGBT oriented woman setting out in the world, and the issues that many young people face when ignored by much of society.
  • Set in the backdrop of a modern day London, this comic is intended to be realistic in the extreme ups and downs many young people face in the 21st century.
  • As posed to many modern day graphic novels which rely on a great deal of universe based conflict as characters face cataclysmiuc events, this story is intended to be primarily character driven.
  • The characters seen in this comic are intended to be relatable and understandable in their motivations – flawed in a human way without the need for ‘good’ and ‘bad’ that many stories rely on.

Migration research

When briefed on our graphic narrative project on the topic of migration, I initially became concerned. This project was intended to be based around our own personal experiences. However, neither I nor my close family have any significant experience with regards to migration. As I did not want to insult the complex subject matter of this project, I began to research and consider potential directions that my project could take, outside of anything I have experienced. My initial research was conducted in a sketchbook; pages are seen scanned below.
